Delee started his musical journey in Grenada. At ten, he was a mouth organ player in a scratch band with a box bass, a scratcher, and a milk pan player. He moved on to Harmony Brass as a drummer/vocalist from this rudimentary beginning. By 1979 Delee had co-written the 1979 Grenada Road March song, “Stand up Grenada.” Two years later, he joined the Grenada police Band and expanded his repertoire of musical skills to include those of a second trumpeter. Delee set out for Canada in 1986 to broaden his musical horizons and played with the band Import and the Relatives as a drummer/vocalist.
His 2007 release titled “Party Lover” is still a much-requested song at his several performances to large audiences in the USA, Grenada, and Canada.”
After releasing six full-length (independent) studio albums in the last seven years, Delee quickly became a well-known artist/producer of original high-quality music. Delee has continued to hone his composing, arranging, and engineering skills and produces primarily original music from his Delmatt Studio in Ontario, Canada. Also, he has performed with Baron, Calypso Rose, Red Plastic Bag, and Ajamu, among other outstanding artists. Delee has also worked with Grammy-nominated artist Freddy Will. His 2007 release “Party Lover” is still a much-requested song at his several performances to large audiences.
In 2009 Delee received the award for best Calypso/Soca album for RUSH HOUR at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards in Toronto. In the last two years, he has thrilled the soca scene with two singles: “Weave On” and “Something Sticking Me.” This 2013 recording titled “MORE FETE” again shows the adept musical craftsmanship of Mathew “Delee” John.
